VerbsOn basic terms, a verb is a 'doing word'. Verbs can be used in sentences to describe what something or someone is doing. Laura wrote a letter. Jenny bought a hamster. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Verbs can be affected by tense. This means that, usually, verbs are written differently if they happened in the past than if they are happening now, or will happen in the future. | Past | Present | Future | | Walked | Walk | Will walk | | Jumped | Jump | Will jump | | Skipped | Skip | Will skip |
There are other ways in which tense can be indicated, for example by adding another phrase infront of the verb for example 'used to'. I used to walk - This is indicating that I walked in the past. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Verb PhraseVerb phrases are made up from a subject (the main focus of the phrase,) an object (the thing that the verb is 'done to') and at least one verb. Example; Subject Object Main Verb Auxiliary Verb Modal Auxiliary Verb I play the guitar You should be painting the kitchen ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ A model auxiliary verb shows us a degree of certainty, for examplemight, will, should. Might and should show us a lower degree of certainty than will, which is definate certainty. |
